“Crazy with a passion, crazy with a dream…”

May 29th, 2009

This is how Suzan Lakhan Baptiste describes herself and her 20 year-long mission to protect the Leatherback turtles on Trinidad’s Matura Beach, which had been hunted widely throughout the Caribbean for their meat, fins, and eggs.  In an effort to save the Leatherbacks, Baptiste started “Nature Seekers” – one of Trinidad’s first environmental groups – and spent the next 20 years patrolling the beaches and educating the community about the importance of the Leatherbacks to the country’s burgeoning eco-tourism industry.  Baptiste’s Leatherbacks now enjoy a survival rate of nearly 100% on Matura Beach – all thanks to the crazy turtle lady. Dog Saves Abandoned Baby

May 28th, 2009

(Click here for video of China the Dog) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkrPdNz2v-k

In August of 2008 a farmer named Fabio Anze checked on his dog China and her pups and found a naked baby lying amongst her new born puppies. Fabio lives near the city of La Plata in Argentina. Fabio called authorities, the baby was taken to the hospital, and is now doing fine.

Temperatures at night around La Plata are pretty darn cold, but not freezing. Authorities don’t know if the baby would have survived the night if it hadn’t been for China.

Police located the 14-year-old unwed mother who had abandoned the baby in a nearby field.

It seems that China found the baby laying alone in the field and took it back to her litter of pups to take care of it, saving it’s life for sure.

A3969827 Angel is a 6 month old female Corgi/Shepherd/Terrier mix
puppy who was abandoned at the shelter on May 8th.  Weighing 20 pounds
this sweet girl is petrified at being at the shelter.  If someone
gives her the least bit of love Angel will reward them with absolute
loyalty and devotion.  Angel is in Kennel 300. Angel is just extremely
frightened at being at the shelter and just needs the consistency and
security of a loving home. She has recoiled into her shell since being
dumped at the shelter earlier this month.

“Dog Bite Incidents in Calgary Plummet Due To Laws Targeting Irresponsible Pet Owners, Rather Than Their Dogs”

May 24th, 2009

Three years ago the city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada adopted a novel approach to dealing with reports of dog bites and other aggressive behavior.  Rather than adopt Breed Discriminatory Legislation, like neighboring province Ontario, Calgary animal control officers began investigating each individual report, educating pet owners about dog behavior and proper care, and imposing stiff fines on chronic offenders.  The result has been a steep decrease in the number of reported “aggressive dog” incidents.  To read the full article, click HERE

May 20th, 2009

sable-2-small1 Emma After

We are happy to announce that Emma (formerly Peaches) has found the perfect home with a couple of AAA volunteers who fell in love with her at first site and adopted her immediately. Thanks to everyone who looked after Emma and allowed her the opportunity to be rescued and be one of the lucky ones. Emma loves to go on walks and hikes with Sarah and Jake and she loves visiting with other dogs. She is a great representative for the Pit Bull breed and will help educate the public. Judge the owner and not the breed! This beauty is going to live happily ever after!

New Mutant Strain of Rabies Is Spreading

May 18th, 2009

I was reading The Week (a magazine that everyone should be subscribed to in my opinion) and came across this article on a mutant strain of rabies that seems to be spreading across the state of Arizona (according to National Geographic News). It was first found in skunks and foxes and the scary thing about this strain of rabies is that it is spread like a cold, through close contact with other animals rather than a bite or exchange of fluids. Because of concerns of this disease spreading to humans Flagstaff has issued a 90 day pet quarantine. Everyone should be very careful with their pets and around wild animals in general.
