Kiss Me I’m Irish!!! – Dublin Found His Forever Home!

June 30th, 2009

dublin_1

Hi, my name is Dublin and I’m a 2 to 3 year old neutered male Chihuahua and I have now found my forever home! I was with my foster parents for three weeks and I was so perfect that they could not even imagine not having me around so they adopted me! I love them and that was my secret plan all along.  The shelter had me classified as a mean dog but I was just scared being in that cold kennel. I am now free and a great representative for shelter dogs everywhere.  I’m showing my real personality now and have received many great compliments. I love to play with my rubber duck toy and I just love walks. I’m also perfectly happy just sitting on your lap and kissing your face. Thank you everyone who took the time to get to know me and for saving my life – I plan on enjoying it every single day!

Shelter Volunteer Day

June 27th, 2009

Title: Shelter Volunteer Day
Location: Baldwin Park Shelter – 4275 N. Elton St. Baldwin Park 91706
Description: Bi-Weekly shelter volunteer day where we walk, socialize, photograph and video tape dogs and cats.  For those attending for the first time, we’ll be walking, grooming, socializing, and photographing as many dogs as possible, after which we will circulate an electronic flyer to a large distribution group to network the dogs. A completed county volunteer application (click here LA County Volunteer Application to download) will be required for those who have not submitted one yet. Please also make sure to wear your county volunteer t-shirt or AAA shirt (you may purchase an LA County Volunteer t-shirt for $10 at the shelter).
Additional Details:

(a)  if driving directly to the shelter please plan to meet around 9:00 a.m.  The shelter address is 4275 N. Elton St., Baldwin Park, 91706.  From any location west of downtown LA, take the 10 Freeway east, and take the Puente exit (which is just east of the 605/10 Fwy intersection).  Turn R on Garvey and a L on Pacific.  Take Pacific to Ramona and make a R – stay on left hand lane as you will need to make a L turn at the second light  (after the train tracks) to make sure you are still on Ramona.  Turn L on Elton. Elton is a very small street (almost an alley, really), so it is easy to miss the street sign.  Keep your eyes peeled!

(b) Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and be aware that your clothes and shoes WILL get dirty!

(c) Try to eat breakfast, and bring along an energy bar or snack and some water for lunch, as we will not have time to take an extended lunch break.

Start Time: 9:00

Tasty Dog Treat Recipes

June 27th, 2009

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Why not whip up a batch of your own homemade dog treats for your dog, or your friends and family dogs. They make a great gift and are really fun to make… not to mention very impressive when you tell your friends that you made them yourself.

Basic Yeast Dog Treats

Mix together
3 1/2 cup unbleached flour,
2 cup whole wheat flour,
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup skim milk powder
1 tablespoon (or 1 package) dry yeast
3 1/2 cups lukewarm chicken or meat broth

Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm chicken or meat broth. The richer this broth is, the better your dog will like the biscuits. Let yeast broth mixture set 10 min. Then stir in flour mixture. Roll resulting dough out 1/4″ thick. Cut dog biscuit shapes from dough. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 300* for 45 min. Then turn off oven and leave in overnight to finish hardening. Makes 60 medium-sized biscuits.

Beefy Biscuits

2 cups whole wheat or all purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal
1/4cup wheat germ
2 teaspoon beef bouillon powder
1/2 teaspoon yeast extract (adds additional meaty flavour)

Mix above ingredients in a medium bowl.

Add: 1 large egg, 1 tablespoon cooking oil and 1 cup hot water.

Stir well. Roll out on a well-floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness. Place on ungreased cooking sheet. Bake on center rack, (275 F. or 140 C) for about 2 hours until dry and very hard. Let stand overnight to dry thoroughly. Makes 10 big bones and 14 puppy bones.
