U.S. Postal Service Announces Plan to Prohibit Shipment of Animal Fighting Magazines

August 10th, 2009

In response to a Federal Court order issued in March 2009 instructing the United States Postal Service to reevaluate its decision to permit the shipment of cockfighting magazines via USPS mail, the USPS recently proposed new regulations that would prohibit the shipment of printed matter used to promote illegal animal fighting. The regulations will likely be finalized in September and may be the nail in the proverbial coffin of cockfighting publications, one of which (“The Feathered Warrior”) has already folded. The Humane Society of the United States had filed a lawsuit in 2007 against both the USPS and Amazon.com, claiming that the sale of such magazines violated the Animal Welfare Act. Thus far, Amazon.com has not followed the USPS’ lead. Read full story HERE.

Lost Dog Saves Young Man from Potentially Life-Threatening Seizure

August 10th, 2009

Recently Stacy Savige of Port Tampa, Florida found a friendly terrier wandering around in front of an elementary school without identification tags or a microchip.  She took him home and began to search for his owner.  The next day Stacy’s next-door neighbor, Yolanda Segovia, agreed to watch the dog “just for one day” while Stacy went to work.  But one day turned into two, then three, then four, and the little dog soon proved to be a hero when he witnessed Yolanda’s twenty-one-year-old son having a seizure and sprung into action.  To read the full text of this story, click HERE.

Lucy/Cha Cha Danced her way to the PERFECT Home!

August 10th, 2009

cha cha 2 cha cha 1

Cha Cha (now Lucy) found the perfect home where she now has a great little chi mix brother (Petie, who is another Baldwin Park shelter rescue) as her best friend. The Colgan’s met Lucy and just fell in love with her and she was the perfect companion during her trip back home. The news back is all positive.

Here is what Lucy’s new human mom had to said about how Lucy and Petie are doing: “Well, just another match made in heaven story – as you all know, Chrissie and I traveled home to Sacramento and introduced Lucy to our other angel from AAA, Petie. I’m so happy to report that Petie welcomed Lucy with open paws and I think Lucy truly felt like she was home. They are getting along famously, Lucy has asked to go outside to do her business a few times now with no indoor accidents to report so far (we’ve been home for about 13 hours now-Ha!). Lucy slept in her little bed all night right next to Petie and at one point in the night I noticed they traded places – sooo cute!”  Another amazing rescue! We anxiously await new photos and updates from Lucy and her new family.

This is not your average cat video. I am not into the tons of cat videos on YouTube. Snore. BUT This cat actually plays the piano, her owner recorded it and the Klaipeda Chamber Orchestra, along with conductor and composer Mindaugas Piecaitis made music to go around it. It’s lovely to listen to. Click on the link at the top of the entry to see the video!

23 Percent of Giant Panda Habitat Destroyed

August 3rd, 2009

Ecologists have assessed the damage from the earthquake that hit Sichuan, southwestern China, last May and found that 23 percent of the pandas’ habitat in the study area was destroyed, and fragmentation of the remaining habitat could hinder panda reproduction. According to ecologists this fragmentation will increase the risk of extinction for these Pandas. This area is home to more than half of the habitat for the Earth’s wild giant Panda population.
