Tyler, now Cooper, has found his perfect home. Megan and Aaron met Cooper early last week and just fell in love. Cooper went home to sleep in his new forever home for the first time and is now well on his way to a happy, healthy and cong filled life! This poor little guy was dumped at the Baldwin Park shelter by a family who admitted that their child had been abusing him by kicking him. Despite his hard life, Tyler wanted nothing more than to be loved. He loves to play ball, get his belly rubbed, and play fetch with his favorite cong toy. Congratulations to Megan, Aaron and COOPER!!!

Murphy Needs Your Help!

September 13th, 2009

We hope you enjoyed the video of Murphy’s progress. Murphy was brought to the Baldwin Park Shelter on February 12th by his family because he had lost the use of his back legs. Recognizing that Murphy was suffering, the shelter contacted Animal Advocates Alliance, who agreed to rescue the little guy and took him immediately to the vet. The vet over at Malibu Coast Animal Hospital determined that Murphy had a bulging disc in his spine that was causing pressure on the nerve and resulting in the loss of feeling in his back legs. AAA was told that Murphy had to have spinal surgery to repair the disc immediately, or he would likely never regain his ability to walk. The surgery would only give him a 50/50 shot at walking, but neither AAA nor Murphy were ready to give up. Murphy was escorted to the U.C Davis Small Animal Clinic in Northern California where he had surgery on February 14th. The neurosurgeon was able to repair the disc and Murphy was sent to the ICU for several days. AAA picked up Murphy 10 days later and he has been in foster care ever since. Although Murphy is not yet able to walk, he has shown some voluntary movement in his back legs and tail!! through all of his hard work at physical therapy at the CARE facility in Santa Monica. He has also regained his ability to pee on his own, as evidenced by the number of times he has peed on his foster parents! As you can probably guess, Murphy has racked up quite a veterinary bill or two and hopes that everyone who reads his story will help AAA pay for his continued therapy by making a donation!

So please make a donation for Murphy’s surgery and continued care by clicking here:

Dog's Best Friend

September 10th, 2009

When Craig Mosher’s four year-old pit bull became paralyzed in 2004, he had to make a choice. He had to either put Loois down and say goodbye, or work very hard to keep him alive. Craig is still working hard to keep him alive. You have to see this awesome video. Truly touching. We could all learn from Craig and Loois.

When Mike and Tricia Smith lost their beloved Boston Terrier to Glomerular Kidney Disease, they made a vow. They promised their dog Molly that they’d live a life that would make her proud. Molly loved parties and gatherings so that’s what the couple now does. Every Thursday, in Molly’s honor, they host a sit-down dinner for 6 random people who can make reservations through their website.

Tricia blogs about the suppers and her beloved Molly on her website: http://www.thursdaysuppers.com/dinner-a-dog-and-a-blog.html

If you live near or are planning on visiting the Kansan City area you too can sign up to be a guest at the Smith’s home on their website: http://www.thursdaysuppers.com/

A beautiful way to celebrate the passing of a pet and a truly inspiring story. Please take a moment to check out the links and read about Molly and the Smiths.

Federal Judge in Montana Gives Hunters Green Light to Hunt Wolves in Northern Rockies

September 10th, 2009

On September 8th, U.S. District Court Judge Donald Molloy denied a request by environmentalists to halt organized wolf hunts in Idaho and Montana – the first such organized hunts in the continental U.S. in decades. Although grey wolves were previously listed as an endangered, its recent removal from the endangered species list has made the grey wolf fair game for hunters. Plans for the wolf hunt allow hunters to kill 20% of the 1350 grey wolves in the two states – an amount that Judge Molloy claimed would not result in long term harm to the species. According to Judge Molloy, however, other groups have sued to restore the grey wolf to the endangered species list and will likely prevail. For full story click HERE.

Despite Release of Controversial Eco-documentary, Taiji Continues Annual Dolphin Hunt

September 10th, 2009

Notwithstanding growing pressure from animal rights activists and others, the Japanese fishing town of Taiji proceeded with their annual dolphin hunt, which was the subject of The Cove, an eco-documentary released earlier this year. On September 9th, fishermen caught approximately 1000 bottlenose dolphins and 50 pilot whales. The whales will be slaughtered and sold for human consumption. Approximately 50 of the dolphins will be sold to aquariums in Japan. Although the fisherman are permitted to hunt a total of 2300 small cetaceans, which include dolphins, small whales and porpoises, they claim they will release the remaining dolphins, but insisted that the decision was based on their own judgment and not as a result of pressure from animal activists. Moving Your Dogs From Los Angeles to New York – Is it cruel?

September 7th, 2009

Photobucket

I was one of those people who always thought it was just a little bit cruel to have dogs in New York city. Now I’m going to be one of those people that has dogs in New York city. I’m going to spend a few months with my boyfriend in New York and I’ve decided that I’m taking my dogs with me. I’m not looking forward to flying with two dogs and it’s going to cost a lot of money. It’s shocking to me that to put a dog in the cargo hold costs more than just buying another seat in the plane, but they won’t let dogs over a certain size in the passenger hold unless they are a service dog. I’ve called just about every airline and found the most pet friendly airline to be Midwest Air (http://www.midwestairlines.com/) with their pet safe cargo hold. They pride themselves on their pet safe cargo hold that is air conditioned, pressure controlled and though very basic in appearance is a nice comfortable ride for your pooch.

Photobucket

I don’t care, I still don’t like the idea of my baby riding in the belly of the plane but I’m going to go for it and I’ll let you know how it works out.

Photobucket

The hardest part about going away is finding someone to sublet my apartment. It’s an awesome apartment and it’s pet friendly but finding the right person, someone you trust, someone who will take good care of the two cats I plan on leaving behind is really hard.

Photobucket

Another thing we’re going to have to learn is to “curb” which I just found out means that my dogs have to go to the bathroom off the curb and in the street. I wonder how hard it’s going to be to get that to happen. They’ve always gone on nice fresh green grass, so I don’t know how they’re going to take to going on cement.

It’s really going to be a whole new world. If you have any advice on curb training or traveling with multiple dogs please leave me a comment. I’m very nervous but I know it’s going to work out and I’ll have lots to write about in the process.
