Title: Baldwin Park Shelter Volunteer Day
Location: Baldwin Park Shelter – 4275 N. Elton St., Baldwin Park, CA 91706
Description: If participating for the first time, we will be walking, grooming, socializing, and photographing as many dogs and cats as possible, after which we will circulate an electronic flyer to a large distribution group for networking.

Please also make sure to wear your county volunteer t-shirt or AAA shirt.
(you may purchase an LA County Volunteer t-shirt for $10 at the shelter following completion of orientation).

Additional Details:

*Please plan to meet around 9:00 a.m. The shelter address is 4275 N. Elton St., Baldwin Park, 91706. From any location west of downtown LA, take the 10 Freeway east, and take the Puente exit (which is just east of the 605/10 Fwy intersection). Turn R on
Garvey and Left on Pacific. Take Pacific to Ramona and make a Rright – stay on left hand lane as you will need to make a Left turn at the second light (after the train tracks) to make sure you are still on Ramona. Turn Left on Elton. Elton is a very small street (almost an alley), so it is easy to miss the street sign. Keep your eyes peeled!
* Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and be aware that your clothes and shoes WILL get dirty!
* Try to eat breakfast, and bring along an energy bar or snack and some water for lunch, as we normally do not have time to take an extended lunch break

Thank you for challenging yourself to make the time to help wonderful shelter animals!

Oh Canada . . . Chippawa has Arrived!

November 13th, 2009

Chippawa2 Chippawa

This little gem was on a recent AAA networking list. Abandoned at the Baldwin Park kill shelter like many other dogs just like him, this boy was a forgotten soul until we got our hands on him. Fortunately he was rescued and transported to Vancouver where he was recently adopted by a police officer. Here is a short description about Chippawa’s (now Chip’s) recent experiences from his new parent.

“Chip was a busy boy today riding a bus, a skytrain, a car and a cop car.  Everywhere he went people would break out into a smile. He is such a happy little boy. Tail wagging all the time. We went to Tisol on Arbutus where he met lots of new doggie friends.  He tried out a bed and curled right up in it, a nice reflective waterproof coat he waggled his bum in, some of that Chihuahua food you recommended, some treats & chews, a harness, lead, a nice metal bowl for his food…. He was being spoiled rotten. Every store we went into gave him treats – he liked that very much. Then we headed down to another doggie store where we bought him a lovely cableknit wool coat and a name tag.  He literally pranced down the street once he started wearing it. The nametag should be ready in the next day or so.

Gracie [the cat] & Chip ate their dinners side by side. Both more interested in the other one’s food.  She’s following him around and vice versa.  They’re trying to figure each other out. But all in all he seems to be settling in well. :)

Thank you ever so much for letting Gracie & I have the opportunity to give Chip a forever home. We decided Chip was such a perfect name for him so we’re not going to change it.”

To all the other pups sitting at our local shelters right now, we will do our best to make sure you have the same opportunity as our little friend Chip, whether in LA or all the way in Vancouver.

Dog Found Duct Taped in Woods

November 12th, 2009

In the woods of Upstate New York, a beagle was found duct taped and discarded in a black plastic garbage bag.  The man who found the dog thought she was dead until he picked her up and she cried out.  The dog was brought to a veterinary hospital where they methodically removed the tape.  The owners, who had been looking for their wayward dog Daisy for at least two weeks, were reunited with their dog thanks to a micro-chip installed in the dog’s skin. Police are now looking into how the dog might have ended up bound in the woods. For complete story click HERE.

Taiwan's Agriculture Agency Urged to Set up Animal Protection Unit

November 12th, 2009

The Environment and Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST) released survey results showing that 104 out of 122 animal shelters around the country had failed to meet the necessary qualifications of the Animal Protection Act.  The EAST said the government should set up a division dedicated to animal protection and dealing with the stray animal problem, which has become serious due to pet owners abandoning their pets when they find it troublesome or costly to raise them. With increasingly frequent news reports about cruelty to animals, Taiwanese legislators passed a resolution Thursday demanding that the Council of Agriculture set up an animal protection division to improve the care of stray animals.
