Former Michael Vick Pit Bull Enjoying New Life As Therapy Dog

December 29th, 2009

Hector is one of Michael Vick’s former fighting dogs who now has a fantastic forever home with Clara and Andrew Yori.  They quickly learned that Henry isn’t any good as an athlete, like his Frisbee-champ brother Wallace. But his calm, sweet personality was well-suited for work as a licensed therapy dog. His new life contrasts starkly with his past: Hector spends his days visiting nursing homes, hospitals and schools with Clara! For complete story click HERE.

Great Dane Left in a Garage to Starve/ Happy Ending

December 29th, 2009

Izzy, a female Great Dane, was rescued from a garage where her owners left her to starve to death. A tip from a concerned citizen prompted an investigation by the local Humane Society.  The animal control officers were not prepared for what they found: Izzy was barricaded in a filthy garage with no windows or ventilation, left there to die, skin and bones covered in fleas and ants.  While Izzy miraculously survived and is now in a loving home and weighs about 100 pounds, her former owner was convicted of animal cruelty, sentenced to time in jail and prohibited from owning animals in the future. Sly is one Handsome Pup Looking for a Home

December 28th, 2009

Sly

Sly Malone is one handsome German Shepherd/Doberman mix!!! In fact, he looks like a perfect 50/50 split between both breeds! He’s neutered, approximately 1 1/2 years old and weighs a sleek 78 lbs. He’s a medium energy dog and just a big, goofy puppy. He’s OK on the leash and gets very excited to go outdoors, but once he’s out, settles down pretty quickly.  He would make a great family pet!

Sly is an old and gentle soul and loves relaxing and people/dog watching.  He gets along swimmingly with other dogs and will engage in playful tag when he meets a dog willing and able to reciprocate the game. He loves car rides and loves to bury his face in a bowl of fresh water- he wants to scuba dive.
He is willing and eager to please and although not fully trained, sitting was an easy thing to learn for him.
He is a sweet dog who only wants to be loved and to love someone back.
He is really mellow and could live in an apartment…

Our Pets Sniff a Cancer Warning

December 25th, 2009

Paula Bockman-Chato had first believed that the constant sniffing and nuzzling under her arm by her beloved saluki Kaspar was just the dog being affectionate but that was until a medical check revealed early signs of lymph node cancer in the very spot that had attracted Kaspar’s attention.  Mrs. Bockman-Chato said she would not have been aware of the disease if it wasn’t for Kaspar.  While this story is remarkable, it is not uncommon. Scientific research has now confirmed what was long anecdotally believed – dogs are highly successful in sniffing out cancer in humans thanks to their incredible sense of smell.
