One Lucky Bulldog!

March 16th, 2010

This is what poor little George the bulldog looked like when he was rescued. Yet another great example of what animals always teach humans, George, a forgotten soul at the shelter suffering from many painful health issues, did not care what he looked like on the outside or what his rescuers looked like on the outside. He was nothing but love and happiness from day one. Read about George’s journey below and get inspired by how he lives his life now and help other animals have a similar opportunity. Thank you Nikki for saving George and giving him this fantastic opportunity at a new happy life!

“George (now Humphrey) was adopted by Corin and Dan, whose English Bulldog, Bogart, recently died.  They were missing him and their mastiff, Dudley, was depressed, so they decided to get another bullie.  They originally inquired about another rescue bulldog, Shakespeare.  But when they met Humphrey, it was love at first sight and they decided to adopt him!  His first day, Humphrey went to their vet, the beach, and spent time sunning himself, and snuggling with Dudley. Coming up is a family trip to Ojai with a bunch of friends and their dogs.  A wonderful happy ending for a happy little guy that got a hellish start in life….”

Dog Survives Being Shot In The Head TWICE

March 11th, 2010

I caught this story on Twitter: http://www.revenantmedia.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2118

Imagine a dog being shot in the head with a shot gun and surviving? Well that happened to Jasmine the pitbull. Not only was she shot in the head with a shotgun, she was shot twice – survived and is now in a foster home and looking for a permanent home. Charges are pending against her abuser. You can click on the link above to read the whole story, needless to say Jasmine is a sweet girl (as you can see in the pic above) who has a little separation anxiety, but who doesn’t? Hell, I have separation anxiety and I’ve never been shot in the head with a shotgun. Her foster parents are working with her so that she can be placed in a forever home.

Anyone in the Omaha area that is interested in learning more about Jasmine or other animals in need of adoption can call (402) 426-9330 or look for a petfinder link at omaha.com.

Oscar Winners Go After A Sushi Restaurat In LA For Serving Whale

March 11th, 2010

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/09/us/09sushi.html?ref=todayspaper

This “sushi sting” started in October, when film makers behind the movie The Cove heard from friends in the music industry that the Hump, a highly rated sushi restaurant next to the runway at the Santa Monica airport, was serving whale. So the film makers set up a sting complete with hidden cameras and microphones.

“Video of their meal shows the two activists, both vegan, being served what the waitress can be heard calling “whale” — thick pink slices — that they take squeamish bites of before tossing into a Ziploc bag in a purse.”

An investigation is under way.

Australian Zoo Hails 'Miracle" Elephant!

March 11th, 2010

The Taronga Zoo in Australia welcomed a male elephant calf, born early on Wednesday.  He is being called the ‘miracle’ baby because breeding experts said the unborn elephant’s heart had stopped beating days earlier and was expected to be a stillborn. The calf was described as “very weak” soon after he was born but managed to take his first steps and drink some milk. The calf will remain in the zoo’s heated elephant barn while he is given intensive care by the elephant birth team. There’s no guarantee of his long-term survival but zoo staff and veterinarians remain hopeful. For complete story click HERE.

UK Dog Owners Could be Forced to Microchip and Insure Their Pets

March 11th, 2010

In a country where guns are tightly controlled, UK street thugs have turned to dangerous-looking dogs to cow their victims.  As part of a proposed crackdown on the country’s dangerous canines, British dog owners maybe forced to microchip and insure their pets.  Microchipping would help trace the owners of dogs involved in attacks, while third-party insurance would ensure that victims of dog attacks were properly compensated for any injuries. Many citizens complain that the insurance plan would impose a financial penalty on innocent pet owners — while criminals who own violent animals will simply shirk the law. Dog Attacked By Hawk – Lives to Bark Another Day

March 8th, 2010

From Examiner.com

Brody the dog was out in his back yard relieving himself, the safest place in the world right???? Wrong… he was attacked by a hawk in his own back yard. Everyone with a small dog has feared that something like this could happen to their dog.

“Brody’s dad heard a distressed canine cry and immediately sprang into action. He witnessed Brody being attacked by the bird under the confines of a lawn chair. Paternal instincts kicked in and within seconds Brody’s dad scared away the foul fowl.”

Brody showed visible signs of skin trauma from the hawk’s assault.

Please be careful, you never know what can happen… even in your own back yard.

Lost Dog Turns Up 600 Miles Away from Home

March 4th, 2010

About two weeks before Christmas 2009 an 85-lb German shepherd named Deacon went missing from his family home in rural Virginia.  After a couple weeks the family gave up hope and assumed the dog died or had been stolen.   In late February an animal control officer from Florida called to report he had Deacon at his shelter!  The Holts believe Deacon was stolen by people who had hoped to breed him, unaware that he had been neutered. Thanks to a microchip, Deacon is now back with his family in Virginia! For complete story click HERE.
