A truly strange photo from China. A pipeline exploded claiming 13 lives and inuring hundreds of people.
But amidst all the explosion, fire, chaos and blood, this photo clearly captures a small monkey grabbing a puppy and running away from the blast site. He’s rescuing his friend. Look at the sense of urgency on that little monkey’s face. The puppy clearly has no idea what’s going on. Amazing.

The Governor of Delaware just signed the most sweeping, progressive companion animal protection legislation in the United States. the Delaware Companion Animal Protection Act mandates collaboration between shelters and rescue groups. A shelter cannot kill an animal if a rescue group is willing to save that animal’s life. But that is just the beginning. It also makes convenience killing illegal—shelters can no longer kill an animal when there are available cages or the animals can share a cage or kennel with another one. The law also requires posting “all stray animals on the Internet with sufficient detail to allow them to be recognized and claimed by their owners,” requires shelters to maintain registries of rescue groups willing to save lives, and requires shelters to post statistics (intake, adoption, reclaim, transfer and killing rate). At their 7/29/2010 meeting, the Austin City Council banned retail sales of cats and dogs. Austin joins other cities like Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Albuquerque, N.M., Lake Tahoe, Nev. and West Hollywood, Calif. in enacting this kind of ban. For complete story click HERE.
Catalonia recently became the first region on the Spanish mainland to outlaw bullfighting. On Wednesday Lawmakers in Catalonia’s regional parliament approved the controversial ban. The ban will take effect in the region, of which Barcelona is the capital, in 2012. Banning bullfighting further undermines Spanish unity, say traditionalists, who have pledged to seek protected status for bullfighting as a cultural landmark. Opponents of the ban also argue that it will have adverse economic effects, including eliminating jobs, a bad message to send when unemployment stands at 20%. For complete story click HERE.
Four-year-old Buster was romping in his backyard in the suburban town of Littleton, CO when his owner Jodi heard him scream. She ran outside to find a coyote running off with little Buster in his mouth. While Jodi was in pursuit, a pair of pit bulls were on neighborhood watch and ran toward the coyote, on a mission to rescue the poor dog. Realizing he was outnumbered, the coyote released Buster and ran off. “The pits followed my dog underneath a bush, guarding him,” Jodi recalls. “[They] lay next to him, licked him and protected him.” Buster had surgery on August 2nd and is well on the road to recovery – thanks to two brave, caring pit bulls who rescued him from a coyote! 7 out of 14 dogs died inside the cargo hold of the American Airlines plane on Tuesday. The dogs, which were sent by an “unidentified commercial dog-breeding operation in Oklahoma”- otherwise known as a puppy mill (can we say that?) were to make connecting flights at O’Hare airport which would take them to pet stores in other states. Only 7 of the 14 dogs were deemed “air-worthy,” and they were placed on the second flight. Investigators are looking at factors ranging from heat stroke to carbon monoxide poisoning to pre-existing health problems in connection with a shipment of the puppies. For complete story click HERE.
