Tan, White, Brown, Black, Spotted, Brindle…. What’s your preference?

December 15th, 2011 by Allyson

What are the qualities that you look for in a pet?  Personality, looks….color? Believe it or not, you make choices based on color.   Many of us don’t realize that we have a natural tendency to choose things based on color preference, even potential pets.  In fact, you may not even realize that you make these choices when it comes to a more complex situation such as adopting a pet.

We have seen this phenomenon first hand.  Brody, a 3 year pit/staffordshire bull terrier mix has been with us for quite some time now.

Similarly one of our cats, Sammy, has yet to attract an adopter.

Sammy and Brody have many similarities: playful and loving personalities, sure to make a great companion for someone. They also are the same color.  With all of the positive qualities that these amazing animals have, it is hard to believe that someone wouldn’t choose them as a new best friend.  However, most people looking for pets are oblivious to their inherit color selection.

Many of us have the perfect pet in mind, and also envision the color that we deem most appealing. As an owner of many pets, I too have associated my perfect pet with a particular color.  Unfortunately, our color preferences can cause us to overlook perfect companions like Sammy and Brody.

When you look for a pet, make sure you look for the most important quality: personality.  Just like you choose your friends based on their amiability, choose your pets on the same basis. Talk to shelter staff and tell them what qualities you are looking for in a pet. Maybe you are an athletic type, and would like a companion to accompany you on your exercise adventures.  A large animal with high energy levels will be perfect for you.  Perhaps you have a job that requires you to stay behind a computer and you want a calm, quiet pet for company.  If this is the case, then a relaxed and smaller animal will suit your lifestyle.

Choosing a pet by their personality will ensure the happiness of both your and your new pet. Furthermore, it will ensure your success as a pet owner.  The next time you are looking for a pet, write down a list of characteristics that you would like in a friend that would fit your lifestyle. Then, take your list to a shelter and choose a pet according to your list.  That way, pets like Brody and Sammy will have a fair chance at a good home!

Find Your New Best Friend Today

November 8th, 2011 by Allyson

A pet is not just an animal, but a life long friend.  No matter how young or old we are, there is nothing like the companionship of our pets. Everyday, millions of animals end up in shelters and eagerly await adoption.  Unfortunately, many are euthanized within three days of shelter intake.  Help stop this trend and adopt today! We have a variety of wonderful pets that are ready to be adopted.  Please visit our adoption page to see a grand list of animals for adoption.  Your best friend may be just a click away!
