1. Shelter dogs have too much baggage. It’s better to adopt a puppy to start with a clean slate.

False. Most shelter dogs are well-behaved dogs who, through no fault of their own, were abandoned or relinquished by their original owners. Often adult shelter rescues make ideal candidates for people who don’t want to deal with puppy energy or chewing! And most rescue organizations like AAA take the time to match the potential adopter with the right dog to create a suitable companionship from the beginning.

2) An old dog can’t learn new tricks.

False. Old dogs not only learn new tricks but they thrive when trained as many people who have adopted adult rescue dogs can testify! Many shelter rescues are not house-broken but with crate training and/or scheduled breaks, they are usually soon successfully house-trained. Ok, so intense agility training may not be possible for a 13 year-old pug, but so long as a dog is properly motivated and physically and mentally capable of learning to perform a behavior, there is no reason for them not to be trainable.

3) When your dog has a potty accident, rub their nose in it to let them know what they did.

False. Rubbing your dog’s nose in it, generally has the opposite affect of encouraging good house-breaking. Firstly, they often don’t see the association between the accident and your nose-rubbing action, and secondly, it teaches dogs that humans can be unpredictable and dangerous, which can lead to them sneaking off to go to the bathroom in another room.

4) When a dog chews up shoes or destroys furniture it’s because she’s punishing the owner.

False. Dogs don’t chew on furniture and your favorite Pradas to punish you, but primarily because it feels good on their teeth, relieves boredom, releases energy and sometimes indicates separation anxiety. That’s why it’s important when getting a dog to consider its needs as well as yours, and choose one that fits your lifestyle. A well-exercised, stimulated dog, is usually one that will leave your shoes alone.

5) A dog who cowers from people was probably abused in the past.

False. Of course, sometimes a dog will cower away because it has been hit, but more commonly it’s because it was not properly socialized or had negative experiences as a puppy which is the prime socialization period. And sometimes genetics can contribute to a fearful dog. Other dogs are uncomfortable with petting or have simply learned to dodge people grabbing their collar. Unfortunately, most strangers approach dogs by reaching down to pet, bending over the top of the dog’s head as they do so. This causes timid dogs to cower. The best way to approach is to kneel, with your body turned to the side, and then invite the dog to approach you.
