Milla is a Staffordshire Terrier who was found as a stray in the Beverlywood area of Los Angeles on February 7, 2010. A member of the too often misunderstood, neglected, abused and victimized staffie/pit bull breed, Milla was so happy to have found a companion in her rescuer. Unfortunately Milla did not have a microchip and there were no signs of anyone looking for their lost pet. Milla did not have a collar or a tag and was found with a chain around her neck. She also appeared to have been wandering the streets for a while as she was found very skinny and tired. Milla is an extremely sweet little Staffie. She weighs approximately 50 lbs and is between 2 and 3 years old. She absolutely loves people and seems to be dog tolerant although will definitely need socialization, training and proper introduction. She loves treats and is very gentle. She knows how to sit on command and listens attentively. We hope to continue to search for Milla’s possible owner with adequate consideration to the condition she was found but our expectation is that she will be available for adoption shortly. She’s currently in great need of a foster home. If you are interested in meeting Milla or can open your home to foster this sweet dog please email Phillip at PhillipG@AnimalAdvocatesAlliance.org.

Phoebe had a tough life. She found her way to the South LA shelter having been previously bred and neglected. She was impounded with an embedded collar that had to be surgically removed. Fortunately for this sweet 2 year old pug terrier mix, the wonderful Tamika of the South LA shelter acted as her guardian angel and selected her for the Univision network weekly dog of the week program. She was discovered by AAA and rescued the following day. Phoebe’s foster parents fell in love with her just after one night and the rest is history. Enjoy this video of a wonderful dog that escaped the grip of death and is now living the life that all homeless pets deserve.

Thanks to the tireless work of many caring people who did not give up on networking Teddy, this sweet boy now has a wonderful home to call his very own. Networking through email, facebook, twitter and any means possible works and Teddy is living proof of that. He was scheduled to be killed today and instead he will be sleeping in his own comfortable bed surrounded by two loving people that will provide him with the life he always deserved. Hopefully one day all homeless pets will have a similar opportunity. Watch the video below to see Teddy in his new home and hear the words of his new guardians. Thank you Carey and John!

The American military is rushing delivery of dozens of bomb-detection dogs to Iraq. The first shipment of 25 dogs is expected on Friday. Another 120 bomb-sniffing dogs are scheduled to arrive in Iraq over the next 12 months. The worries over security are strong enough to overcome reluctance among Iraqi forces to use canines because of Islamic religious taboos that consider dogs unclean animals. While U.S. troops and foreign private security firms often used sniffing dogs, Iraqis relied on them far less – both because troops didn’t like using them and Iraqi citizens didn’t like being searched by them. Besides the religious sensitivities, Iraqi forces are also simply not used to working with dogs, causing some initial resistance to expanding the program. Iraq’s current K-9 program only has 47 bomb, narcotic and patrol dogs in Baghdad and another 20 dogs divided up among the provinces. The dogs will be used to search cars, buildings and other areas – not people, unless they are suspected of being a bomber.

Several groups have developed a plan to help men and women in the armed forces find temporary homes for their pets when they are deployed. Although foster families do not receive payment for caring for the animals, the pet owners typically pay for food, veterinary care and other day-to-day expenses. Many volunteers send regular reports to the pets’ owners in an effort to boost morale and let them know how their pets are doing. Knowing that their pets are being cared for while they are servicing overseas gives soldiers peace of mind and the foster families consider it a chance to give back to the troops defending the country. For complete story click HERE.

In 2005 Deiter and Bella were among many animals abandoned in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Best Friends, an animal rescue out of Utah, saved the dogs and adopted them out to New Orleans residents Paul and Christine Fowler. The Fowlers later relocated with their dogs to Haiti. Last month, when a massive earthquake shook Haiti, Paul Fowler searched unsuccessfully through the rubble and thought for sure his dogs had perished. But as he was about to give up hope, he heard Deiter bark. The dogs were on the third floor of their apartment building buried under a bed that was covered in debris. As if one natural disaster isn’t enough, these two canine troopers survived two major natural disasters! The whole family is now back in the US, once again residing in New Orleans.

The West Hollywood City Council unanimously approved an ordinance to ban the sale of cats and dogs Monday evening. However, the city must vote and approve the ordinance a second time at its February 16th meeting, when it is expected to pass. This ordinance prohibits the sale of ALL dogs and cats at companion animal stores. Stores that sell animals provided to them by a rescue or shelter and stores that breed animals on the premises will be allowed to continue selling the pets. If passed, existing pet stores will have until September 17th to comply. For complete story click HERE.
